You Don’t Have to Carry It

Sometimes the heaviest things we carry are the things God never asked us to hold.

We carry old wounds.
Words spoken over us years ago.
Disappointments we thought we had moved past.
Questions that were never answered.
Guilt. Regret. Fear.
And sometimes even the responsibility for things that were never ours to fix.

We become so accustomed to carrying the weight that we forget what it feels like to walk without it.

But Jesus never asked you to drag yesterday into tomorrow.

He invites you to give it to Him.

“Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.” — 1 Peter 5:7

There is something incredibly tender in those words: because He cares for you.

God isn't asking you to release what hurts because it doesn't matter.

He is asking you to release it because you matter to Him.

You don't have to understand everything that happened before you surrender it. You don't have to receive the apology. You don't have to have every question answered. And you don't have to wait until the memory no longer hurts.

Sometimes surrender simply sounds like:

“Jesus, I cannot carry this anymore. Please carry it for me.”

And then, when you find yourself picking it back up tomorrow, you give it to Him again.

Healing is gradual.

Sometimes you have to let go of the same thing 100 times.

And every time you place it back into His hands, you are not failing.

You are learning to trust.

You are learning that His hands are strong enough to hold what yours were never meant to carry.

You are learning what freedom feels like.

And little by little, the weight begins to lift.

You don't have to carry it anymore.

Reflection

What are you still carrying that God may be asking you to place in His hands?

Maybe it is a memory you keep revisiting.
A hurt you keep trying to understand.
Someone you are struggling to forgive.
A version of yourself you still feel ashamed of.
Or something that happened to you that you were never meant to carry as your identity.

You do not have to force yourself to “get over it.”

Instead, bring it honestly before God.

Name it.

Acknowledge that it hurt.

And then ask Him to help you loosen your grip.

You may have to surrender it again tomorrow—and that is okay.

Healing is not always one moment of letting go. Sometimes healing is choosing, again and again, to place what hurts into the hands of the One who loves you.

Prayer

Father,

You know the things I have carried quietly. You know the memories, the questions, the disappointments, and the wounds I have held onto because I did not know what else to do with them.

Today, I bring them to You.

Teach me to release what I was never meant to carry. When I am tempted to pick it back up, gently remind me that it is already in Your hands.

Help me trust You with the things I cannot change, the answers I may never receive, and the parts of my story I still do not understand.

Heal what still hurts.

Restore what has been broken.

And teach my heart what it feels like to walk in the freedom You have already given me.

I surrender it again today.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
